There are three methods you can draw a column or pillar in your takeoff so that any flooring material underneath will be excluded. However, each way is different in the effect it creates. Depending on the situation, you may want to choose one method over the others.
Method 1: Insert Hole
The Insert Hole method is the best way to represent a column. It essentially creates a hole in your floor plan which excludes any flooring material, and creates walls bordering the hole from floor to ceiling. This makes it the most visually accurate out of all three methods. More importantly, this also allows you to apply self-coving to the column. For more details on how to insert a hole, please follow these instructions:
Method 2: Elevation
An elevation is typically used to create countertops, cabinets, or other raised platforms. You may use an elevation to draw a column in a similar fashion, and even change its height so that it goes from floor to ceiling. Unlike the Insert Hole method, you cannot apply any self-coving to an elevation. If you want to apply coving, use the Insert Hole method instead.
