To best represent this stair runner, you can simply add a stair to your diagram and give it the same width as the stair runner, and not the true width of the actual stair.
For example, if the width of your stair is 3'6" and your stair runner in 2'6", you can draw a stair and set its width to 2'6", as shown below:
